Adele
Adele is very similar to the artist i am using, they both use acoustic and accapella. Adele was 19 when her first single came out 'Chasing Pavements'. She had her own myspace which she put her song up that she wrote and let people listen to them for free. She played gigs when she was unsigned and promoted herself with the gigs. She became recognised on Myspace, she recieved an offer from Virgin. When she signed, she provided vocals for Jack Penate 'My Yvonne' which helped her kickstart her career. Adele doesn't have any promotional material as she feels like she is not worldwide enough, she feel she is niche. Her first album '19' was promoted when her first single came out. Media texts such as the internet and telly were where this took place.
Kate Nash
Kate Nash, after several gigs, she uploaded her music to MySpace. She found a manager for herself before seeking producers for her music. Nash's debut was a single, "Birds". Kate only has a couple of tshirts as her merchandise. This is a good way to promote herself and fan will where this top and brand promote Kate. She used Myspace which was hugely popular, and like Adele, she set up gigs by herself to widen her fanbase.Duffy
Duffy was 15 when she first started singing. She promoted herself by singing in different local bands. at the age of 19 she went of WAWFFACTOR, the welsh version of The X Factor. She came second, which eventually would help her career boost in 2004. She didn't use Myspace like many other artists. She covered songs from artists and sent them out and also started to write her own songs. Once she got signed, after her first album she did the best promotion tactic. She took part in an 2008 Diet Coke advert, where she sung one of her own songs. This gave her great publicity and opened up new fans for her.
In my opinion, the best way to promote music yourself is to start up a Myspace and add your songs for people to access and listen to. This helps build up a fan base and can give the artist an idea of if they should carry on or not. Also, to set up/sign up for gigs for unsigned artists, this is a great idea for promotion as very often there are Label Executives looking to sign artists. What doesn't work well when promoting yourself is not having available merchandise. How else can you expand and get noticed. Artists like Katy Perry have a Brand Identity by have her Logo pink and Blue, this is all over her merchandise so it makes it easier for people to know It is Katy Perry's merchandise without putting a face with an image.
